Villanelle - Silent Gloom

In the silent gloom of nocturne
shadows dance on white picket fence
grieving porch still awaits his return

She hides behind the lilac curtain
from prying judgemental eyes
In the silent gloom of nocturne

Tea stained shirt and flowering fern
old memories still linger on
grieving porch still awaits his return

They say he left for another one
young and rich and gorgeous too
In the silent gloom of nocturne

Tonight would begin a new sojourn
her heart had broken many a times
grieving porch still awaits his return

By the light of flickering lantern
She sits alone, weaving a dream,
In the silent gloom of nocturne
grieving porch still awaits his return

Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa.

The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).
